Any Old School Hip-Hop & RnB Fans On Here?

I just wanted to know if there's anyone on here who was, and probably still is, massively into the urban flavours of the 1990s. Back in the day it was pretty much the only thing that my friends and I would listen to. Rap, hip hop, swingbeat, RnB. And to get American import stuff was a VERY big deal. While a lot of the artists we listened to were American, during the late nineties, a lot of British artists started doing well in the mainstream charts. People like Eternal, Damage, The Honeyz, All saints etc. Those sounds were really blowing up back then.

If you've been following the news, you'll know that in more recent times a lot of the artists that were big names in the hip hop and rnb arenas have been involved in scandalous behaviours. R Kelly, P Diddy, Fat Joe etc. I think that's why …

I do like my music but RnB wasn't necessarily my preferred choice. I'm more into rock and alternative. But doing my clubbing era, the clubs were always playing hip hop and rnb and even listening to those tunes now takes me back.

As for the scandals that have been occurring, I think people still listen to the artist's work. They just don't tell anyone about it for fear of being judged. Whether it's right or wrong is a bit of a complex issue and everyone will have their own opinion on that.

How Different were your childhood Christmases to those now?

I may sound like I'm bragging but I really don't think I've ever had a bad Christmas in my life, and I owe that to my brilliant parents! I'm an only child (not spoilt, I promise) and my parents always went all out for me. In the lead up to Christmas there'd be shopping trips up to London, visits to Santa's grotto, and other events. And then on the day itself we'd have family, friends, and neighbours join us in the evening. Sometimes though we went over to other family members' homes for Christmas and that was great too.

Now that I'm a mum, I work very hard to keep that magic alive for my own kids who are still quite young. I want them to look back at Christmas as a special time, so a lot of the traditions and things my parents did for me, I do for…

Well I celebrate Christmas in the summer months when it's hot and sunny for a start! Going to the beach on Christmas Day was never one of my traditions growing up but I love it!

Murder, Mystery, Suspense Anyone?

I was talking about this to a friend the other day but she didn't have any recollection at all. I haven't found what I'm looking for online either so I'm wondering if I've dreamt the whole thing up!

When I was about 8 or 9 maybe there used to be a TV anthology series called Murder, Mystery, Suspense. At least I'm sure that's what it was called. I grew up in Britain but this series was American and I think it was shown on ITV. It was a weekly drama, shown on a weeknight, and on quite late (ie past my bedtime!) so I don't even know how I got to know about it! I think the opening credits included dark and gloomy storm clouds. I quite like such shows so I'd like to see it again but can't seem to find it.

Does anyone know which anthology series I'm…

It definitely is American but I'm not familiar with it. I guess it was labelled MMS for British viewers.

What Are Your Favourite Hobbies and What Do They Say About You?

ree

I was reading one of my vintage mags this afternoon (can't remember if this was from the 90s or 00s.) And I came across this article about hobbies and what they say about you as a person. I used to love these types of personality quizzes that you'd get in teen and women's mags back in the day. I'd spend maybe a bit too long trying to work out if I really was the personality type that was being described!

However while I love all the hobbies mentioned, I'm not sure they really do describe me very well. I think I am a curious woman of the world, and I am nostalgic of course - though not sure about a trendsetter 🤔 But as for everything else... Nah! They definitely didn't get it right where I'm concerned 😁 But maybe everyone else!

I like blogging. That's another hobby and my…

Here's Jessie!!!

Hi beautiful people! 😀

My name's Jessica and I'm a brand new follower here. I love everything old school so I've definitely come to the right place! I see quite a few of you have introduced yourselves so I thought I would too.

I'm from the good old London Borough of Brent. Lived there until I was in my mid thirties (now in my late forties) and now live in Hertfordshire - funnily enough like a lot of the people I went to school with so I'm always bumping into them in and around town! I'm of Irish descent but I was actually born in India back in the mid seventies. My family came to live in London when I was about three, and we've been here ever since. My parents still live in the same house that me, my sisters and brother all grew up in so it's always…

What Will Everyone Be Doing Coronation Weekend?

Coronation weekend is just around the corner and I wanted to know what everyone will be doing. It's a once in a lifetime event (although I know there are people out there who will have been around for the Queen's coronation!) I've never seen one before and I am a fan of the royals so I'm quite excited.

As I work as a florist, I'm busy making arrangements and deliveries for all sorts of upcoming events. A friend of ours will be hosting a very special Coronation garden party (which might have to be moved indoors depending on the weather!)

Are you as excited about the Coronation as I am and what Britain will be like under the rein of the new King Charles?

I would have loved to have been in London for this event. I've been to London before and enjoyed my visit so it would have been great to be there for such a historic occasion but sadly it wasn't meant to be. Maybe for Kate and William's coronation, who knows! 😉👑

Rewriting the classics: Should we, could we, why would we?

First of all, hello everybody. I'm a brand new member who's finally signed up after knowing about this site for a long time. Looking forward to seeing what else this site has in store.

Unless you've been living on another planet, you'll all know about the raging debate regarding the children's books written by Roald Dahl and now Ian Fleming's books have come under attack as well. I have to say that I'm all for censorship where it matters, so that we all have a good idea of what's right and what isn't and we all know where we stand. And over the last few years, there are a lot of changes that have occurred that I'm pleased to see have taken place, although I know many won't agree with me and that's fine. But that said, I disagree with any kind of censorship, reform, or amendment that is done…

Today everything is being changed super fast. I reckon by the time my boys are adults, alot of the things I grew up with will have changed beyond all recognition. I don't really know how I feel about it. I guess I would say that if it's important for something to be changed then OK. but if it's just for the hell of it or for the sake of fashion then that's a different story.

Family Traditions at Christmastime

Christmas is just around the corner. Even though I know when it is EVERY year, it still seems to creep up on me and I'm left totally unprepared! Haha! Still have masses to do before the big day.

It seems all so different to how it was back in the day when as kids, Christmas took forever to come by. But we loved all the customs and traditions that we had back then - carol singers, nativity plays, shops decked out with glittery decorations, and people wishing you a merry Christmas and actually meaning it! Not a grumble to be heard!

But of course it's the family traditions that stick out in my mind. We had a set of Christmas decorations that were put on the tree every year - some of them made by my mum. And she also used to bake these delicious cookies each year including these…

We're a very devout Catholic family so Christmas was always a very religious affair for us. We did what everyone else did - the tree, the presents, the dinner, having the family over etc. But we also put a crib up, went to midnight mass or mass Christmas morning. For us the spiritual part of Christmas was as important as everything else.

The one and only Mister Nostalgia!

So the community count has gone up by one! Brand new member here although my missus has been on this site here for a while but only told me about it quite recently. Hang your head in shame Laislabonita or whatever social media name your using here (she's got quite a few!) Don't you know that nostalgia is one of my many middle names?

It appears that it's the done thing around here to introduce yourself to the rest of the group. I'm not really very good at talking about myself as some of you may have gathered but I'll give it my best shot! 😉 I'm in my mid -fifties, born in the sixties, mad about the seventies, from good old Blighty, a dad of three, fur dad of one and husband to one (second marriage but who's counting?) I love travel with America being one of my best…
