Goodbye to a Walford Legend: The Life and Times of EastEnders' Zoe Slater (Part i)

Actress Michelle Ryan had always made it clear that she would NEVER return to the soap role that had made her a household name as EastEnders’ Zoe Slater. She’d turned down numerous offers to reprise the role and even gave her blessing to a recast if they needed the character back so badly. So the show’s fans were shocked but delighted when Michelle turned up on our screens again last summer as Kat Slater’s long-lost daughter after an absence of twenty years and twenty years of saying no way to a return. And 2025 Zoe was soon in the middle of all the drama again just as early 2000s Zoe had been. In fact, sometimes, she was the cause of it!

But then just as we were getting used to seeing Zoe back on Albert Square, the character we'd waited twenty years to make a comeback... gets killed off in the least dramatic way possible, making waving goodbye from the back of a black cab seem like a more entertaining option! Since the news broke that Michelle was to leave the top British soap - and permanently this time - fans have been baffled. While there have been rumours of what may or may not have been going on behind the scenes - with Michelle setting the record straight during a recent interview with Radio Times - viewers are still puzzled as to why the show went to all the effort to coax back an iconic character only to decide to kill her off less than a year later without any fuss or drama - dying in her sleep after a nasty knock to the head!!! How strange to think we won’t see  Zoe strutting down Bridge Street in another twenty years' time. Hang on - since when has being killed off stopped any former Walford resident from returning? Just ask Kathy or Cindy!

As we say goodbye to one of the most memorable members of the legendary Slater family, we take a look at some of the storylines and moments that made Zoe Slater one of the most memorable EastEnders characters ever.

1. Sonia-Jamie-Zoe Love Triangle

Sixteen year old Zoe Slater had only been in Walford for all of five minutes when Phil Mitchell’s young cousin, Jamie Mitchell caught her eye. Hardly surprising considering he looked like a cross between a young David Beckham and a member of a nineties boyband. The two would have made a very striking looking couple who looked as though they’d just stepped out of the pages of one of Just Seventeen's photo stories. Unfortunately for Zoe though, there was the slight problem of Jamie’s girlfriend, Sonia Jackson. Not that Zoe was going to let an insignificant detail like that stand in the way of a relationship with Jamie. And on a trip to Brighton, Zoe finally got her man! Or so she thought…

 Upon returning to Walford, Zoe was convinced that she and Jamie were now a couple and put pressure on him to dump Sonia. But Jamie was torn between Zoe and Sonia. He felt sorry for cheating on Sonia but couldn’t get Zoe out of his mind. It looked like the decision was made for him when during a row with an already suspicious Sonia, Zoe gloatingly revealed all about her night in Brighton with Jamie. However Jamie and Sonia soon patched things up and stayed together, leaving Zoe broken-hearted. 

2. You Ain’t My Muvva!

One EastEnders’ most iconic scenes - we wonder how many times Michelle Ryan (and Jessie Wallace for that matter) has had to put up with one of the most memorable bits of EastEnders’s dialogue yelled at her while out and about. It’s pretty much up there with “This, my sweet, is a letter from my solicitor…”

When the Slaters first arrived in Albert Square, it was believed that head of the household, Charlie Slater, had five daughters, with Zoe being the youngest. However a few months in, during an emotional exchange between Charlie and his daughter Kat, EastEnders viewers were let in on the secret that Kat was actually  Zoe’s real mother and not her sister - something that Zoe had yet to discover.

And discover she did when a super-excited Zoe revealed that she would be moving to Spain to work for her Uncle Harry, Charlie’s brother. Kat was vehemently against the idea of Zoe moving abroad, and before long an argument broke out between the pair with Zoe furiously storming off with Kat not far behind. In what is now a scene considered an EastEnders classic, Zoe and Kat continued having a slanging match in the street, when Zoe yelled at Kat that she couldn’t tell her what to do because “you ain’t my muvva.” To which Kat tearfully screamed “YES, I AM.” And with that, the cat (no pun intended!) was well and truly out of the bag.

What followed was a series of well acted and well written scenes in which the whole Slater clan, regardless of whether they were in on the secret or not, came to terms with the revelation. But there was still something that most of the Slaters were unaware of and that was of Zoe’s paternity. Who was her real father? In heartbreaking scenes, Kat was forced to reveal that she became pregnant after being assaulted at thirteen - by Harry.

3. Zoe Runs Away

Unable to cope with reliving her childhood trauma, Kat made an attempt on her own life and was found by a distraught Zoe. Finding it hard to deal with recent events and revelations, Zoe packed a bag and walked off into the night while all the family were at the hospital by Kat’s bedside. This added to the family’s pain, especially Kat’s, when they realized that that Zoe had run away and as time went on, they feared the worst. Charlie would drive around London in his cab, trying to find Zoe, and his desperation was noted by a young homeless man who took advantage of Charlie’s plight by pretending he knew where Zoe was.

Thankfully Zoe did reach out to Kat’s youngest sister, Little Mo, who persuaded her to come home much to the family’s relief. But after another row, Zoe took off again and was living on the streets - where she fell into the clutches of a low-class madam, Roxy Drake, who groomed Zoe and tried to force her into a life of prostitution. To Zoe’s great surprise - and no doubt relief - Kat and her on-off partner, Dr. Anthony Trueman, managed to track down Zoe on Christmas day and arrive just in time to witness Roxy’s aggresive behaviour towards Zoe and dragged her away towards the safety of home. But not before a furious Kat headbutted Roxy, proving you don’t mess with a Slater girl. Charlie’s immense joy and relief at Zoe coming home made for one of the most heartwarming EastEnders festive moments. 

4. Almost Mrs. Trueman

Nobody quite understood how softly-spoken, gentle-natured Dr. Anthony Trueman got together with loud, brash, always-up-for-a-ruck Kat Slater. She was the kind of woman your mother warned you about - and Anthony had received more than his fair share of warnings from his mother, Audrey! But it was during one of the ‘off’ moments in Kat and Anthony’s on-off relationship that he fell for someone else - Zoe!

By now, Zoe was eighteen and she and Kat were working hard to get their relationship back on track since the revelation that Kat was Zoe’s mother. To make matters worse, Kat had decided that she wanted to reconcile with Anthony. So when Anthony nervously announced his relationship with Zoe to her horrified family, Kat reacted by angrily whacking Zoe across the face!

But despite her family’s strong opposition to their relationship, Zoe and Anthony went from strength to strength and even got engaged. But before the wedding took place, Zoe ran off again, leaving Anthony heartbroken. So heartbroken, in fact, that he fell into Kat’s arms on what was supposed to have been his and Zoe’s wedding day. When Zoe came back to the Square, she thought that she and Anthony could work things out and make a go of things. That was until she found Anthony in bed - with her mum. Never mind handguns at dawn, it was two lukewarm mugs of tea at the night cafe after Zoe had delivered Kat an almighty slap! During a very tense discussion, Zoe realized that Anthony’s heart had probably always been with her mum, so she tearfully stepped aside and allowed Kat and Anthony to resume their relationship. However Kat soon realised that she wasn’t cut out to be the respectable wife of the local doctor after all. But seeing as Zoe had sacrificed her own happiness for her, Kat felt that she couldn't just walk away. Zoe, however, wasn’t fooled and managed to convince her mum that she didn’t have to be trapped in a relationship she didn’t want to be in for her sake. So Kat waved goodbye to a devastated Anthony for the last time.

It was after Anthony and Zoe made their returns to Walford in 2025, some twenty years after leaving, that viewers learned that the pair did briefly resume their relationship off-screen in which Zoe became pregnant with twins who she later abandoned due to the effects of a traumatic birth - something that she would deeply come to regret. She spent the following years searching for her son believing that her daughter had died shortly after her birth. However it was during a very dramatic showdown with Zoe on Christmas day last year, that Anthony - who by now was no more Mr-Nice-Guy (as often happens in soaps!) discovered that he was the father of Zoe’s twins. And it was during an altercation with Zoe, that Anthony was killed after being struck over the head by his long-lost daughter, Jasmine. 

5. Best Friend Kelly Taylor

The streets of Walford are paved with the memories of female friendships. Sharon and Michelle… Tiffany and Bianca… Dot and Ethel… and then there was Zoe and Kelly. The pair first met as runaways when they both fell into the clutches of evil pimp, Roxy Drake. Zoe was rescued by her mum, Kat, and Kelly eventually managed to escape. And when Zoe returned to the Square after months of being away following her broken engagement to Dr. Trueman - Kelly came along too and was welcomed into the Slater household. The two eventually got a flat together and set up a stall selling clothes. There was the usual ups and downs experienced by two gal pals sharing a flat. But one of the biggest hurdles they faced was their mutual attraction to neighbour, Ronnie Ferreira. And the aftermath of a bus crash in Scotland put a further strain on the friendship when, while caring for an injured Zoe, the two friends shared a kiss that led to much confusion and hostility until the friends talked it over, and realizing that the kiss came from a place of fear and anxiety, the two made amends.

Unfortunately Kelly didn’t stick around for long and eventually went to Ibiza along with Ronnie’s sister, Kareena, to work as club reps. And when Zoe fled the Square a year later, she went to Ibiza to live it up with her mate, Kel! Although what happened to the friendship over the years is anyone’s guess as Zoe never mentioned her former best friend since her return. It’s a shame as Zoe quite clearly could have done with a good friend.
