Children are notorious for getting easily frightened. Some adults as well I suppose! Some of us might remember having to sleep with the light/TV on, or might even have had to get into our parents bed because we were too scared to sleep by ourselves. I know that this was me or my brothers on more than one occasion!
I'd like to know what frightened you lot as a child? Here's a list of things that scared the bejeezus out of me!
A scary movie
A crime committed in the local area
A child who had gone missing in any area
Someone I may have seen in the street who just looked dead scary (although they probably were of course quite innocent!)
Hearing strange noises in the night especially if I thought they were coming from my room!
Oh gosh, things like offal and giblets and things like that. They looked dead disgusting and even when I was a meat eater, I never touched them. No liver and onions for this girl!
Another one here who was afraid of the dark.
Don't laugh at me but the thing that creeped me out the most as a kid (or one of them anyway) were bananas! I'm not joking, for some reason bananas terrified me. I don't think I even tried one until I was over the age of ten when they started to appear a lot less scary. No idea what the problem was but now I have no problem with them.
There really wasn't very much that made me feel afraid. Apart from some rather intimating girls at school who looked as though they'd start a fight with their own reflection just so that they could say they beat someone up!
It's always been snakes for me. Luckily I haven't come across too many in my lifetime. I also vaguely remember my mom having trouble getting me to sleep because I was afraid of the dark as a very young child.
Spiders without a doubt! I'm glad I got over that for the most part because I live in Oz now and we have all kinds of creepy crawlies here - some proper lethal ones too. And to think I used to be terrified of them when I lived at home!
Oh goodness, what didn't freak me out as a kid! In fact what doesn't freak me out as an adult! 😂
I was afraid of the dark as some of you have said, but another thing that totally creeped me the hell out were those Crimestoppers appeals in the eighties and nineties. Those of you who lived in Britain at that time will know what I'm talking about, They would appear out of nowhere during daytime commercial breaks without warning. The opening credits which featured a montage of facial parts combined with eerie music were truly frightening. Well for a child anyway. And the way the brief reconstructions were filmed were also quite sinister. While I understand the point of these appeals, I wonder if it ever dawned on anyone in broadcasting that children watching these would be scared out of their wits. I was! I'd think about what I'd seen that day as I was falling asleep. No wonder I wanted to sleep in my parents room. I'm just glad that for much of that time, I shared a room with my sister.
I'll be honest I didn't really scare that easy as a child. I've always been quite calm and not someone to get into a flap over things. But I grew up in the same area that Madame Bo did and it was a rough area. The one thing i remember that frightened me was when I'd be tucked up in bed and hear angry shouting outside on the street because it made me feel like something terrible was happening. Now whenever I hear that i just think it's probably just someone who's had one too many and is being stupid. It usually is!
I lived in an area that wasn't the safest and there was a lot of crime. So when something did happen, it could be quite scary. Also horror movies and TV shows would freak me out.
I weren't a kid who scared so easy. Maybe it were my tough northern upbringing! Hehe! I remember when I were little I were afraid of the dark like a lot of little 'uns are but I don't think that lasted so long. Not sure how I outgrew that. Need to ask my mam. Oh and I were afraid of pigeons for a while too. No idea why. I just remember having a real meltdown if one ever came near me! Hehe! Thank goodness I got over that one!
