This sounds like a rather odd question so let me explain.
I was reading some youtube comments where someone got told off for using the word 'womanizer' because apparently it's so outdated and no one uses that anymore. And now that I think about it, it is so true. People will say things like 'ladies' man,' 'cheat' or player these days. There are of course more but these are just the ones I can mention. I can't remember the last time I heard someone described as a 'womanizer.'
But it got me thinking about words that we all used at one time but now seem to have vanished. Of course some of them are no longer used because it's not considered part of polite conversation any more.
One I can think of is 'lame' which we used to use when something wasn't good. I can't remember when that one died out but I think it's safe to say it will most definitely not be making a comeback for obvious reasons! And 'wicked' and 'groovy' well nobody uses them any more and they really do sound dated.
I'm trying to think of the words we used a lot when I was growing up. I know people still say wicked but not as much as they used to. And bad which meant good. I'm not sure if anyone says phat anymore either which also means good. Oh we used to call people a dufus when they were being an idiot. That's one I haven't heard in ages.
While nothing instantly comes to mind, I bet there must be tons of words from back in my day that we don't use anymore. Oh yeah - dork! I can't remember the last time I heard that.
Good question, NiLon! It definitely got me thinking. And you're right - womanizer isn't one I've heard in a long time either.
I remember several years back when watching Fresh Fields, the episode where Hester wore a gorgeous blue housecoat, I realized that I hadn't heard the word 'housecoat' in years. It's all 'robe' or 'gown' now.
Oh and back in the day, we used to use the word 'lyrics' a lot. We weren't talking about song words but rather cool slang words that were 'in'. So you would hear things like: "What kind of lyric was that?" or "Get your own damn lyrics!" "Don't be using my lyrics," and on it went!
Womanizer! LOL! Now that you mention it, it's true. You really don't hear that any more. Some of the alternatives can't be repeated here but I'm sure you can guess. 🤐 And likewise philanderer and adulterer are another two you don't really hear nowadays.
There must be tons of words that were 'in' at one time and now are not. My friends and I used to say renegade all the time going back about twenty years ago. That's one I haven't heard or used in a while.
The ones that come to mind right now are things like bare, as in, that was bare rude, and we used to say breeze when someone was talking rubbish. I don't hear either of those now so they must be proper old. We also used to use a lot of American slang that I don't hear now.
