A friend and I were discussing kids TV shows we enjoyed a lot when we were children. As a child of the 90s, I really do think we had the best kids TV shows. The one that really took us back was Bernard's Watch, a British show on ITV which began in the late 90s and had quite a run, lasting until 2001. We loved that although I didn't watch too much of the remake as by then I was starting to get a bit too mature for such shows. Hehe! There was a whole host of shows we enjoyed: Clarissa explains it all, Sabrina the teenage witch, Art attack, How 2, Grange Hill... there's just so many.
Which children's TV shows did the members of Nostalgia Pie enjoy watching?
My mom made sure that me and my sister didn't spend our lives sat in front of the TV all the time but I still watched quite a lot of TV anyhow. LOL! Clarissa, Alex Mack, Saved by the bell, Power Rangers. I swear we had the best shows growing up!
Wow, this thread has really brought back so many memories of shows I used to watch. Some I'd totally forgotten. One that nobody's mentioned that I really loved was Marmalade Atkins. I went to school with quite a few Marmalades myself! Was I ever a bit like Marmalade? Now that would be telling! 😉 RIP Charlotte Coleman 🕊️
I've just thought of another one - Dodger, Bonzo and the Rest! Does anyone remember that one? It was on in the 1980s and was about a group of kids in a children's home. Dodger and Bonzo were brother and sister with Dodger being played by Lee Ross, a well-known face on British TV (EastEnders, Press Gang, Catherine Tate etc.) The show's theme tune was Our House by Madness. I know I used to watch Dodger, Bonzo and the Rest whenever it was on so I don't know why my memories of what happened on the show are very vague. I'd have to watch it again to jog my memory, although I do remember an episode where Bonzo was hit by a car. 😣 Thankfully she survived! 😊
OMG, I loved Bernard's Watch too. That was a brilliant show. I did get to watch the new show as well and thoroughly enjoyed that too. And while these were not aimed at kids, Haha, I have to say that I loved South Park, The Simpsons and Family Guy! Great shows, great times!
We've had debates about the eighties and nineties being the best decades for children's shows, well - child of the seventies here! And I reckon we beat you all hands down. Haha! Although some of my childhood did run into the eighties so I probably had the best of both.
We did indeed have amazing kids TV shows. Jackanory and the Book Tower probably got me more into reading and I'm still a bookworm today. My other faves included Follyfoot, Crackerjack, Grange Hill, Record Breakers and Magpie.
Yes everyone, I'm that old!
Does anyone remember Cockleshell Bay with Robin and Rosie? I know it was around in the eighties but not sure if it continued into the nineties. I also loved Funhouse with Pat Sharp and the twins Martina and... Ooh, I can't remember. Monica??? And Why Don't You? All great shows.
Our house is Kids TV non-stop because of my little ones who are Cbeebies mad! But for me I loved Playdays - especially the tent stop! I also liked Chucklevision and as a big S Club fan, Miami 7.
Wow - where do I start with this! I was born in the late seventies so my children's TV show watching days were the eighties and part of the nineties, like many of you hear I'd imagine. And I really don't care what anyone says - we had the best TV shows. My kids were born in the noughties, where there were channels dedicated to kids shows. Something we didn't have. So while they had more choice, their shows weren't a patch on the ones we grew up with. Button Moon, Postman Pat, Blue Peter, Play School, Allsorts, How 2, Worzel Gummidge... Brilliant times!
I liked shows that were a bit quirky and odd-ball. A bit like me I suppose! I liked Inspector Gadget, Mr. Majeika and Supergran. I can still hear the Supergran theme tune in my head sung by one and only Billy Connelly!
I think I was about 14 when I lost interest in Kids TV shows. Because I was so grown up then. LOL! I have a brother and sister who are much younger than me so growing up we always had kids shows on the telly and I was very aware of what all the little ones were into. There has been talk on some other posts about the Broom Cupboard and Newsround and I did catch glimpses of these just before the beginning of Neighbours.
But I don't think we can have a discussion about kids TV without mentioning the legendary Blue Peter. I actually just looked it up and I can't believe it - it's still running! I used to watch that a lot but alas never got that Blue Peter badge!
OK first of all Framboise, I have to stop you right there. Everyone knows that it's the kids of the eighties who had the best TV shows! Haha! In fact if you were a child who grew up in that decade, then I think it's safe to say that you watched an awful lot of telly! So it's just as well that they catered to children with regards to TV shows that suited our tastes. as we were never away from our TV sets.
This post has come along at just the right time for me as I've just started watching a TV show from the 1980s called Chocky. It was very well-known back then and pretty much everyone was watching it - except me for some reason. And you've got to remember I was a typical eighties child who was glued to the telly so no idea why I wasn't hooked on Chocky along with everyone else. Perhaps because it's a sci-fi show which has never really been one of my genres but I must admit, I am enjoying it.
Along with the shows you've mentioned, Framboiseberet, I also used to watch Byker Grove, Degrassi High, Dramarama, Jackanory, as well as some more obscure kids TV shows such as Henry's Leg and C.A.B. - two mystery shows, and International Storyteller which was a kids TV anthology series based on a collection of folk tales from around the world.
Saturday morning TV with it's collection of cartoons and magazine-style Tv shows such as Motormouth and Saturday Superstore. Oh and TV during the summer holidays was ace! I loved the Wide Awake Club with Timmy Mallet and Why Don't You..?
Did I mention I watched way too much TV as a kid??? 😉
