We have a little Yorkshire terrier who's been with us for a few years now. DeeDee is very much a part of the family, and as I often feel outnumbered in a house full of lads, it's great to have another girl about the house. Haha! My boys absolutely love her. We've had fish before, and the boys liked having those. But a dog is different. You're more hands on with them for a start!
I never had any pets growing up. I'm not actually sure why that was as us kids did want one but it just never happened. I suppose that's something I'll have to ask my mum about. So DeeDee is actually my first real pet. I can't believe I waited until I was in my thirties to get a pet. I definitely wouldn't want to be without her now. She's absolutely adorable and everyone who meets her falls in love with her.
Did you ever have any pets when you were growing up and do you have any pet tales to share?
We weren't able to have pets in our house growing up, so the closest things we had to pets were the cats and dogs that my aunts and uncles had. I was about five I think when the first cat I'd ever known - my aunt's cat Bert - passed away. I was over at my grandad's house (many of my aunts and uncles still lived with him back then) and even at that young age I could sense that something awful had happened. I then found my aunt sobbing in her bedroom and I couldn't understand a word she was saying so I went downstairs and all the grown ups were talking about Bert dying. It was a very sad day but even though I'd known him for the briefest of moments, I've never forgotten him. And now he's been joined by all the other cats, dogs, fish, and even a ferret who have been pets belonging to someone in the family who have since passed on - and none of them have ever been forgotten.
