As a girl who loves her puddings, I've just remembered it's been eons since I last had one of those Heinz tinned puddings. I'm pretty sure the last time I scoffed one of those was back in the late nineties.
If I remember correctly, Heinz were the only ones who did puddings-in-a-can (correct me if I'm wrong) and I think they were four different varieties: spotted dick, chocolate, treacle (my fave) and jam (I think.)
I live in the States now so I don't know if they're still as readily available as they once were. A quick online search shows they have been given a new look and are called Heinz Taste of Home Puddings. I know they can be bought online but don't remember seeing them on supermarket shelves last time I was home.
Is/was anyone a fan of these?
I've been told that these puddings are still available in most leading supermarkets. Well if they are I've certainly never seen them. I need to ask my friends exactly where it is they've seen them. But I do remember having these when I was very young. The treacle pudding was gorgeous. I remember that. I'm sure I liked the others too but it's the treacle that stands out in my head.
I do remember these. I think I tried the chocolate, the treacle and the spotted dick. I'd never seen a pudding in a tin before so it was a real novelty. But the novelty soon wore off! I wasn't a fan and I really don't know if these are still available.
I remember them well because we sometimes had them for afters. If I'm not mistaken I'm sure they're still around - I don't think it was that long ago since I last saw them. But I think I tried one around 15 years ago or so and I wasn't impressed. They've changed a lot since I were a kid. And in any case as I love pottering around the kitchen and baking things from scratch, I'd rather whip up my own.
Due to healthier eating choices, I don't eat these puddings any more and tbh, I don't even know if they still exist. But I do remember these and enjoyed them.
I do remember those tinned puddings. We very rarely had them because my mum didn't think they were particularly healthy and I'm sure she was right! She preferred to make desserts from scratch and as she's a good baker, she didn't really need to buy ready made puds.
I don't really recall seeing them in the supermarkets either. And unless they're suitable for vegans, I certainly won't be buying them.
Funnily enough a good friend of mine actually contacted Heinz to find out, and he was told that the range has been discontinued and many of the flavours were done away with a long time ago 😯 Furthermore there were a lot more than four flavours but off the top of my head right now, I can only remember the lemon.
It's a shame that another bit of our childhood has disappeared but then in the year 2020 more and more people are geared towards healthy eating, and somehow I don't think a tinned pudding fits that - even if they were quite tasty!
Even before I left England, I can't remember seeing them. I certainly wasn't looking out for them because tbh I didn't really like them. My nan was fond of the jam ones and usually served them up when we went over to hers for our tea.
My guess is that they're still around but probably not the full range of varieties. I don't think I know anyone now who buys them.
