This idea for this post came from Cheesegalore as I've just replied to his post about the cheese dishes we liked in childhood. So I'm now asking everyone what their fave potato dishes from childhood were and if you still like them. I don't know anyone who doesn't eat potatoes unless they're on a diet or something. We ate masses of them in our family. I think it's probably a staple for most families that are on a tight budget and it was no different for us. For us, potato favourites included:
Chips - of course! Not skinny fries or potatoe wedges but chip shop style fat chips.
Mashed potatoes - often served with sausages or pie.
Shepherds pie
Fish pie
Roast spuds
Jacket spuds
Bubble and squeak - or champ if you're Irish like us.
Chips and gravy! I'm a northerner through and through so I grew up on chips and gravy, and trust me - it makes everything all right again!
Curly fries or potato smilies every time. Even now that I'm an adult!
Pomme purée! I grew up in France so this was our mashed potato. Smooth, creamy and so delicious. And not a lump in sight!
My dad's Italian so I've been eating gnocchi since I was so high and I love it. But it's got to be in tomato sauce. I now make it for my children and before anyone asks no I do not make it from scratch! Haha! Where would I find the time? So it's from the supermarket I'm afraid but they love it anyway! Haha!
My mum's potato salad which also uses sweet potatoes. It's so well-season and has lots of spices and flavour. No family event was complete without this potato salad and my mum would always make a huge batch and take it along with her. I make it for my kids now and also to take to barbeques and other parties. Everyone always seems to enjoy it.
Sausage and mash or pork chops and mash for me.
I have Hungarian heritage and there are two dishes that my mom used to make, and still makes sometimes when I'm home. One is a potato dish made with paprika and bacon, and another is potatoes in a kind of tomato sauce. They are both very delicious and what my sister and I enjoyed growing up.
Well I do come from an Irish background so there was always potatoes going at our house. Or podaydos as we used to call them! We used to have them with almost every evening meal. Unless we were having spaghetti Bolognese or something. Quite simply mash potatoes - the more buttery the better - and buttered boiled potatoes with parsley are my two faves. It's what my mum used to serve up a lot and it takes me back to my childhood.
Something my mum used to make me when I was a child was jacket potato and baked beans. Even now if I'm ill or having a tough day and in need of some comfort food, it hits the spot every time.
I'm a massive potato fan. And to be honest, I think it shows so I really ought to cut down! Haha! 🥔🥔🥔😆 Well I do like a lot of the dishes mentioned by joeysgirl, and as we learned to make jacket potatoes at school during our home ec class, I'm always reminded of that time when I make jacket potatoes now. But another favourite of mine is my aunt's potato salad. I really can't stand shop bought potato salad and thought all potato salads were the same. But then I tried one made by my aunt when I was a teenager, and it totally changed my outlook on potato salad! 😁 That's the recipe I use now and it's proved a big hit with my mother-in-law.
Chips, chips, and loads more chips ta! Haha! And by chips I mean those proper chips that you get in the chip shop - proper chunky homecooked style chips. I grew up in Essex where there are loads of chip shops so it's no wonder I grew up eating these. Especially when I was a teen, and I was hanging out with my mates after school. I live in America now where those kind of chips are very hard to come by. The closest I can usually find are steak fries.
What's there not to love about potatoes! I like 'em in any shape, size or form, and cooked any old way. Haha! I reckon I've been eating potatoes since I started solids! It were definitely on our table most meals. Shepherd's pie is real comfort food, and roast spuds to me are all about roast dinners whether it be Sunday lunch or for Christmas dinner. You can't go without your roasties!
Oh wow, Joeys Girl, I am delighted to be the inspiration behind this great question. Haha! Thank you. 😃
And to answer your question, I have two childhood favourites. One is a type of potato cake that I have mentioned in the other post. And the other is my mother's potato curry. What can I say my mother is an excellent cook! 😊
I might be vegan now but as a child I loved shep pie. My mum made the fluffiest mashed potato topping. There's been mention of comfort food on here and for me, this was absolutely it. I still make shep pie but of course it's with veggie mince and non dairy products. And I certainly don't scrimp on the potato layer, I can tell you that for nowt!
While I don't really believe in denying myself anything, I do limit the amount of potatoes I eat as now that I'm getting older I'm gaining weight alot more easier. But I can never say no to fresh fries right out of the fryer doused in ketchup. Now that is what I call comfort food! As a child, my parents took us out to hamburger places as a treat so hamburger and fries brings back memories of those family times.
I do love my potatoes. LOL! 🥔 When I became a vegan, I had to make some massive changes to my diet but thankfully I never had to give up potatoes which has always been like comfort food for me. As a teenager I often used to stop off at the chippy on the way home from school with my friends. And my mum always used to make me a jacket potato whenever I was ill, and even now I love the comfort aspect of it. Back then I used to have it with butter and cheddar but these days I prefer my jacket potatoes topped with a vegan chilli.
Oh and roasties always remind me of family Sunday lunches either at home or at the local carvery.
