I was inspired to create this post thanks to Bailamos, regarding a comment I saw on the Walnut Whips post. Bailamos said that she'd rather have a life with rather than without Walnut Whips even if they're not how she remembered them to be. I agree with her completely. The Wanut Whips we have today are nothing like the ones we grew up with but they're still tasty and I still wouldn't say no to one! But then that's how it is with a lot of the surviving chocolate bars - they're not the same as they once were.
But it's not just food or drink but anything from the past that ended long ago. People wish for it to come back but then when it's here, there are cries of 'It's just not like how it used to be.'
Take Neighbours for example. Everyone moaned about it for years saying it had gone downhill and it wasn't like how it was in the eighties and nineties. Then it gets axed and everyone's up in arms about it and trying to find ways to save it. Then by some miracle, Neighbours returns - and there are some who are still not happy saying that writers should have done this or that and brought back so and so!
So I suppose what I'm asking is is it a good thing to bring back things from the past even if they're not a 100% as we remembered them. Is it better to have it even if it's different or not have it at all?
This is a tough one to answer! Well first of all, I think it depends on what 'it' is. For me personally there are some things I can live without if it's not going to be as good as it were. I think the key here is that even if it's going to be different, make it different but in a good way. And I don't feel a lot of these changes are. Does anyone remember that game show Mr. and Mrs.? They brought it back in the nineties with Julian Clarey and I were dead excited. But I saw the first episode and I were so disappointed. It were terrible!
The way I see it if you're going to bring something back, just make sure it's good or don't bother. Simple as!
That's a good question, Joeysgirl. I don't think this is a question where I can give a straightforward yes or no answer. I suppose it depends on what it is and how badly we need it. Using the example of Walnut Whips, those of us who are familiar with it, well we know it's not the same. But they're still delicious; hit the spot, and we appreciate the feelings of nostalgia they bring about. But when something is drastically bad that it overrides the good memories, that's when we wish that it had gone out on a high and they had just left it alone.
It seems to be a classic case of human nature: We want it but we want it exactly the same as we remember. While change can be accepted by some people, not everyone is the same. But that's the thing - change is inevitable. Nothing stays the same. Just take a look at some of the long running TV series we have. It's definitely not how it used to be but then, can you expect it to be that way?
Haha! I've just seen Bailamos's comment that you're referring to, Joey's Girl! I haven't been on NP for a little while and had a quick read of some of the posts that I've missed out on. Well I have to say, I agree with her. Better to have Walnut Whips than none at all. That's for sure!
Ah bless your heart my love! Delighted to be the inspiration for your post! Hahaha! Never knew I was so inspiring! LOL!
I think it's a classic case of romanticizing. When something has gone, you want it back. Then when it returns, it's not how you remembered iot and then the complaints start. And I have to admit, perhaps I'm a bit guilty of this myself.
Remember that big campaign to bring back Wispa? Well I'm very pleased that it's back in the confectionary aisles where they belong, but we know it's Wispa with a few 21st century tweaks if you know what I mean. But even if it hadn't been discontinued, my guess is that the Wispa of 2024 would still not be the same as the one we enjoyed in the eighties. Everything changes. As for whether I can live with or without certain things, well you already know how I feel about Walnut Whips, as for other things, well I can live with different - but it has to be good different or at least not bad different!
