Whoever coined the phrase "hell hath no fury" clearly watched Mother Love from start to finish! This three-part BBC drama from the mid-eighties was much talked about when it first aired. Diana Rigg gave a fantastic performance as the deranged, spurned first wife who did what Glenn Close did in Fatal Attraction by striking fear into the heart of every man who ever fancied a bit on the side! Not many women would take too kindly to being dumped and left to raise a young child alone but I suppose Rigg's character did take things a bit too far!
Did anyone else watch Mother Love? What are your thoughts on this drama?
Diana was brilliant in that role. I remember when she appeared on Wogan soon after the show was broadcast and of course she was a complete contrast to the character she played. She even said that when she got home after filming she was would get into the shower and literally wash Helena out of her hair. As someone who studied acting, I know that playing a role can be all-consuming so I'm not surprised Diana felt like that.
As for for a DVD, well as far as I know, no official DVD of the show has been released. With 'official' being the key word! 😉
Oh God yeah, I do! I think I was about 16 when it were first shown. Diana Rigg captured the 'mother's (can't remember her name in the show) creepiness very well. I don't think anyone could have played that role the way she did. There's no blood and gore but you'd need a strong stomach to watch it as the mother did some truly awful things. Poisoning kids with marzipan cookies!!! 😱 But that said, I'd love to see it again. I wonder if it's available to buy.
Yes, I've seen it. I only watched it once but I remember thinking how brilliant it was and the late Diana Rigg was superb in that role. I don't think anyone could have played the role of the warped mum quite like she did. It was quite dark and disturbing so I don't know why I was watching it at a fairly young age but it was a good bit of British drama. I do hope they show it again.
