Now that summer has descended upon us, we are officially in 'the wedding season' - and the fact that only small weddings are allowed hasn't changed that!
And it got me thinking about wedding dresses from the 1960s onwards - either famous real-life weddings or from popular culture. Which wedding gowns do you consider to be the most iconic or memorable?
I have four gowns that stand out for me:
Stephanie Seymour's very eighties, very rock chick wedding gown from Guns n' Roses' November Rain video.
Neighbours' Charlene Robinson's when she wed Scott (the wedding of all weddings!)
Princess Diana's ivory-coloured taffeta number.
And it might not be remembered by too many people but former Coronation Street actress Jennifer James' gorgeous Eleni Bridal ballgown with the red crystals when she wed fellow Corrie star Lee Boardman; iconic for me because it was the inspiration for my own wedding gown!
Over to you!
I'm a long-time Neighbours fan so it has to be Charlene's wedding dress. probably the most famous wedding gown from a TV soap!
Jackie Bouvier's when she married JFK. So beautiful.
I like really classic styles with that princess feel. So I do like Princess Kate of England's wedding gown but I think the dress Jessica Simpson wore when she married Nick Lashay is definitely my dream dress. I would say that the gold colored gown she wore to her second wedding stands out more and would be remembered by more people because it's so different but I definitely prefer her first.
For a famous iconic wedding dress, I would have to pick Princess Kate's beuatiful classic gown. I would of chose something like that if it suited my body shape. I did though, get married in a vintage wedding gown which is pretty iconic to me. It was my mom's wedding dress from the seventies. I had the sleeves and neckline altered to suit my style but I loved that dress and couldn't of imagined getting married in anything else. If I have a daughter I'd love for her to ware it but of course that's her choice.
I really don't think though that my brother would ever choose my dad's powder blue suit for if he ever gets married. And not because it doesn't fit! 😂😂
Nostalgia Pie did a post about Frank and Bobby's wedding as that was shown on British screens thirty years ago (yes, I know - thirty years!!!)
At the time, I wasn't sure what to think about the dress that Bobby chose. It wasn't bad but I didn't like the black on it, and I couldn't understand why she didn't wear a veil. Now of course, it's very en vogue to have wedding gowns featuring some kind of black detailing - and not every bride has to wear a veil. So I don't think Bobby's wedding attire would look out of place thirty years later, and I actually like it now.
Who would've thought that Bobby Simpson would be such a trendsetter???
Being a fan of Australian soaps in the nineties, I have to say I was quite taken with Bobbi from Home and Away's dress. Like me, she was not really a girly girl and she managed to get a dress that suited her perfectly. And I thought the black tulle was very rock chick. For my own wedding, I chose something very classic - slim fitting white lace gown. I think people thought I would go for something more standout like Bobbi's but I wanted something that was timeless. Nothing worse than looking at pics on what was supposed to be the best day of your life and thinking "What the hell was I thinking?"
Bianca Jagger's trouser suit really was something. So ahead of her time. I just wish I could pull of that look as fabulously as she did.
I didn't have a typical fairytale wedding gown. In fact it wasn't a wedding gown at all - it was a pale silver empire line, knee-length party dress that I got from Jane Norman! I suppose this isn't really a surprise as I've always admired wedding attire that isn't typically 'weddingy'. So that would include Cilla Black's dresses (both of them - pure sixties!) and Bianca Jagger's trouser suit - just wow!
Princess Grace's without a doubt. The prettiest wedding dress I ever saw.
non-white wedding dresses might be very trendy right now as lots of brides aim for something that will make them stand out from the crowd. But colourful wedding dresses aren't really a new thing. I remember seeing them in magazines from the nineties and in those wedding TV shows.
I'm really amazed at all the comments here because most of you have raved about wedding dresses with some colour in them and not the classic white gown. I wasn't expecting that. Interesting!
And while we're on the subject - does anyone remember Dynasty's Fallon Carrington's pink wedding gown from when she remarried Jeff Colby? As a pink-loving, princess obsessed six year old (I think!) that was most definitely my dream dress!
Not being a princessy kind of girl, I always thought Gwen Stefani's dress was pretty cool: pink and white dip-dye effect that yelled just the right amount of 'wedding' for me!
I'm engaged and although we haven't set a date yet I'm looking at lots of magazines, TV shows etc for inspiration for my own dress. I was only little when I saw Paula Yates's wedding dress from when she married Bob Geldof. That sticks out in my head because that was the first time I'd ever seen a wedding dress that wasn't white or ivory. It was so striking and unique but I think you'd have to be very bold to be able to pull off scarlet! But then Paula was no shrinking violet so it suited her perfectly.
I think I looked at every bridal gown that ever was to get ideas for my own! Although its not completely my style I did admire Avril Lavigne's black wedding gown. Had I been daring enough, I might have gone for that myself because it's so unique and won't be forgotten in a hurry.
