There's quite a few things I didn't like about secondary school, but for me the worst was definitely P.E. In fact it was one of my P.E. teachers who diagnosed me as having P.E - itis... And she was right! I'm a little embarrassed to admit this even now but I used to lie about being ill in order to get out of P.E. And, shock horror, even used to write notes pretending they were from my mum!
As the smallest, weediest kid in the class, I often had to suffer a fate worse than death (well for an eleven year old anyway!) - the last to be picked for teams! If I'm honest, I've never been a naturally sporty person anyway and didn't have much enthusiasm or interest in the subject. But that said, I did amaze myself - and everyone else - by doing really well at dance, gym, rounders and hockey. However I still wasn't doing cartwheels when it was time to head to the changing rooms - but I was when P.E. was dropped in favour of revision classes when we were doing our GCSEs. YESSSS!!!!
Did you hate P.E as much as I did? Or perhaps you loved it? And for those of you who couldn't bear the gym/pitch/field, how did you get out of it?
By PE I guess you mean gym class right? I'm also pretty small and slim and probably don't look like much of an athlete but I did OK. It wasn't my favorite class but it wasn't one I tried to avoid either like some of the kids in my school! LOL!
I didn't mind P.E at all and especially loved dance, swimming and running.
Oh my goodness - I'm so glad we didn't have the 'shirts/skins' thing at my school. Mind you, growing up in Britain and attending the local convent school, that was hardly likely to happen! haha! I think that was very unfair for those who were not body confident, and let's face it - how many kids are???
But we weren't lucky enough to have activities in other places. Other than the local swimming pool that is and even then we hardly ever went. But if we did do such activities, I'm sure a lot of us would have just seen it as a chance to muck about - me included!
I never minded PE or sport as a schoolkid, if nothing else it got you out of the usual school work sitting in classrooms all day. But then I was fairly “sporty” so it never bothered me anyway. Perhaps the only thing that bothered me was when we played a game of something, like hockey for example, and we would have two teams (obviously) and one team would be “shirts” and the other “skins”, which meant one team had to take their shirts off and play bare chested. I wasn’t exactly fat, or even chubby, but I had a bit of “blubber” around the abdomen as a teenager, and naturally I would end up, more often than not, on the “skins” team.
Strangely enough, much to us boy's irritation, the girls never had to do this.
In my later years of high school, we could do things like play ten-pin bowling and squash and would travel by bus to the local places where these things were, that was a lot of fun. Of course, mostly we would just muck around. There were pinball machines at the local bowling alley and kids just mostly spent their time playing those, after maybe one frame of bowling.
I could take or leave P.E and games. It wasn't the best or the worst as far as I was concerned. Probably a bit like how some of us might have felt about history or geography.
Never had a problem with P.E. Certainly didn't dread it. But the problem was that being so small and weedy, I was usually the last to be picked for teams as I don't think my classmates expected great things from me. I may not have been an Olympian but I don't think I were that bad either!
I was always quite active so definitely enjoyed P.E. And it sure beat sitting in a classroom doing double maths or something.
I neither loved nor loathed it but there were other subjects I much preferred.
Always loved P.E. One of my favourite classes. I still love any form of physical fitness now and always encourage that in my kids.
A real gym class enthusiast here! As a dancer and a cheerleader I of course loved anything that involved sport or movement. Sure beat sitting in a classroom!
Always loved sports and being active so gym class was never a problem for me.
Never really had a problem with P.E. Loved Netball and volleyball and probably need to get back into that now. But there were people in my class who I could tell were not exactly jumping for joy whenever it was time to head to changing rooms!
My upbringing was typical of someone who grew up in MT, where we were encouraged to do sports and physical activities. I absolutely loved dance and gym classes, and got to be a cheerleader as I got older. So no I absolutely had no problems with it at all and always looked forward to it. Music, drama, and English were my other favorites.
Dance and netball were my favourates but playing football in the rain and getting all cold and muddy - hated it!
There were a lot of classes I hated at school but gym class was never one of them. And neither was music class.
I'm quite sporty and active so PE wasn't really a problem for me. The only thing I disliked was when we were doing team sports and I was put in a team with the class's nasty 'mean girls'. Mind you I suppose it was better to be put on the same team as them then to play against them.
