I'm a child of the 70s and 80s and if there was one TV programme genre that dominated much of TV back then, aside from soaps that is, then it were game shows! There were loads of them and they made great Saturday night family viewing - not to mention Sunday teatime viewing in all!
I'm asking you all which were your faves but the truth is I couldn't tell you which I liked best. I thought they were all fab! Haha! The Generation Game, Play Your Cards Right, Blankety Blank, The Price is Right... They all bring back great memories. It's sad that many of the people who hosted these shows are no longer with us. They were all great entertainers.
So were you a fan of game shows and which did you enjoy the the most?
I lived throughout the sixties, seventies and eighties and its so true that quiz shows ruled! I would say it stayed that way until the early part of the new millennium. Its pretty much a dying genre now. I suppose the young 'uns are so into that but it was great family entertainment.
I'm amazed no one's mentioned Play Your Cards Right.
Higher, Lower...
And Bullseye! Another great show.
There's some game shows mentioned here that I had long forgotten. Took me right back! 😃
No idea if this counts as a game show, probably more reality TV though it is a game show to me. But my favorite and real guilty pleasure is... The Bachelor/Bachelorette! In fact I even applied to go on one year! True story. 😁
I happen to be a fan of Family Feud. I grew up watching it and it was a show that the older members of my family enjoyed even before I was born. I guess in the UK you call it Family Fortune right?
Jeopardy was also another favorite. My family used to compete among ourselves. Haha!
Anyone who grew up in the eighties like I did will have grown up on a diet of non-stop quiz/game shows, not that I'm complaining about it for a second!
Hearing some of you mention some of these shows that I've forgotten about was a real blast from the past. I remember Telly Addicts (on before Easties on a Tuesday evening) and Every Second Counts (on a Friday night before Dynasty!) I remember watching Blockbusters (Can I have a P please, Bob?) and Countdown with my grandad which was his favourite.
Another one I really liked which I'm not sure many people will remember was one called All Clued Up which was presented by David Hamilton and featured a giant keyboard, the aim of the game was to guess the word a la Wheel of Fortune - but with a giant keyboard rather than a wheel. It used to be on during Sunday afternoons.
I also liked The Price is Right with Leslie Crowther, and to this day I don't think Christmas is Christmas without Brucie's Generation Game. It's a cuddly toy!!!
Yep, I loved my games shows all right!
I can't say I'm a big fan of quiz shows but true they were always on TV and there's still a fair amount of them about. My mum says there were even more before I was born! But I did like watching Family Fortunes with my own family. I'm amazed that none of us ever applied to go on! And we also liked The Weakest Link and Who Wants To Be A Millionaire.
Family Fortunes was quite a tradition in our family. Everything stopped for FF! Another one I remember was 3-2-1. Remember Ted Rogers and Dusty Bin? 😊
I don't think I actually chose to watch quiz shows and it wasn't exactly my thing but they were on all the time so it was a bit hard to avoid. But one I did like was Catchphrase as it was very lively and entertaining and I liked Roy Walker. I don't know if Blind Date counts as a quiz show but if it does, then that was another I enjoyed alot. My mum loved Family Fortunes and was always screaming out the answer like she was on TV. My dad who liked darts was a fan of Bullseye.
My family were game show mad. I don't think there were any we didn't watch. Blockbusters, Strike It Lucky, Countdown, Fifteen to One, Blankety Blank. We saw them all. Maybe it's because that's what pretty much dominated the four channels that we had back then. My own personal favourites were Wheel Of Fortune and Catchphrase.
There's loads that I liked and until I saw this post, I didn't realize just how many quiz shows were around back then. I enjoyed Telly Addicts with Noel Edmonds, and let's face it we were all telly addicts back then. I also liked Every Second Counts with Paul Daniels. And being a music lover, I loved Pop Quiz with Mike Reid (or should that be Mike Reade??? 🤔) I remember that very well-known episode where Spandau Ballet took on Duran Duran. As I was a fan of both bands, I had no idea who to support!
I loved watching game shows. In fact I still do. I liked the kids ones that we used to watch after school like Beat The Teacher and Blockbusters. And I also liked the family ones like The Generation Game, Strike It Lucky, Who Wants To Be A Millionaire and The Weakest Link. We'd all be shouting out the answers at the TV! 😂
