Everyone is talking about Neighbours now that Australia's longest running show is almost over. Some of us haven't watched Neighbours in years and didn't think too much about it. But then it was announced that it was going to be axed and now it's all anyone can talk about! LOL!
What I'd like to know is what are everyones favourite memories of the show. The characters the storylines everything. And feel free to say what you didn't like as well!
Fave storyline - too many to talk about here! But just off the top off my head I'll say when Glen Donnelly turned up in Erinsborough looking for his dad - who was none other than Jim Robinson. So it was great to see Glen back on the street as the soap came to an end, and that he was not forgotten.
The storyline I didn't like - sorry guys but it was Chelly! I didn't think they had any chemistry. I would have thought Kiri was a better person for Chloe than either Elly or Nicolette as they're both super nice and free-spirited.
I'm not sure if 'favourite' is the right word but as Madge's death was the first big storyline when I returned to Britain for good, that's always stuck out in my mind. Thinking of that storyline reminds me of that time and the new chapter in my life. Unfortunately I missed out on much of the early days of Neighbours as I grew up overseas so while I understand how legendary Madge and Harold were, I didn't get to see much of that.
*SPOILERS*
Well it's all over folks - and we're still getting over it! A lot has been said about the final episode but we LOVED it! It was all about the nostalgia and a real treat for those of us who have watched Neighbours since the show began. I loved, loved, LOVED seeing the older crowd (old as in been in the show from the early days, not old as in age!) all hanging out together, and while there have been some complaints that they didn't mingle with the current cast as much (and that the current cast didn't have a big a part as they should have done) we thought that the episode was beautifully done.
The episode really belonged to Mike and Jane, and I for one, am absolutely delighted about that. I loved Mike and Jane, they were one of my fave couples and I saw something very magical about the two of them together. But they took a backseat to Scott and Charlene, and of course they ended up going their separate ways. I hated that the writers split up Mike and Jane, and got Des and Jane together instead - never understood that. But it looks like it's all come full circle now, and seeing Mike and Jane together and making a go of it again was just beautiful. And don't get me started on that house tour - pure nostalgia! And judging by comments that I've come across, it looks like I'm not the only one who thought that. And how much of a star was Guy Pearce! He was a late addition to the final episode but came in, played a massive part in the storyline and totally stole the show! If this was Live Aid, Guy would be Freddie Mercury! Good on ya, Guy!
I also liked the scene filmed by Natalie Imbruglia and Holly Valance. Donna Brown's reference to the 'shrugelero' made me laugh! And how good was it to see Scott and Charlene back again!!! Yes we know, we've heard all the complaints about their scene being mega brief and Charlene not speaking, and while I won't lie - I wish it had been a much bigger part - I'm just glad they came back at all! For years Kylie and Jason were adamant that they would never make a return to Neighbours, and yet they made a comeback and us fans love them for that. It's better that they came back, even briefly, than never returned at all. If there's anything that I found disappointing it's that we didn't get to see the original Erinsborough High gang - Mike, Jane, Scott, and Charlene - back together again. We were given the impression that they were all hanging out together but due to the actors' conflicting schedules, it wasn't possible for Kylie, Jason, and Guy to all film at the same time. But never mind. The show went out on a high and pulled in huge audiences in both Britain and Australia. I've watched the episode twice and got very emotional both times.
I'll get over it one day...😠It's so hard finding something to watch with lunch now!
Neighbours we are really going to miss you.😥
The scene where Karl was having a heart attack and thought he was dying so he called Izzy and Susan. Izzy was her usual self-centred self and didn't even give Karl a chance to explain what was wrong. But Susan was devastated when she thought Karl was dying even after everything he had put her through. It should have been clear to karl then who he should have been with.
There were characters I wasn't all that keen on like Gary Canning and Amber Turner. I found them so boring and didn't miss them at all when they left. Also I never understood how Paul could marry Therese knowing that his brother-in-law would be doctor who told him he had cancer when he didn't.
The Sonya-Toadie partnership definitely. I really do think that after Scott and Charlene they really were the best couple to come out of Neighbours. The chemistry between Eve and Ryan is very evident and in behind the scenes videos, you can see that they're great mates. What I don't like was Sonya being killed off and until today I still cannot understand why. Perhaps it's just as well that Kylie and Jason left when they did as I doubt their characters would have been allowed to live happily ever after.
The finale airs tonight in Australia. It's funny because while there are a lot of people who don't watch the show, there's still a lot of people who seem genuinely saddened that Neighbours has come to an end. Whether you're a fan or not, noone can deny that it is an important piece of Australian television history. No other TV show in this country has lasted this long, even though I know that British viewers and TV industry played a massive role in why Neighbours lasted so long.
One of the things that I didn't like was that they made Paul such a horrible character with narcissistic traits. He's not actually a bad guy so it's hard to understand why he does the things he does.
What did I like? Wow, so many things to choose! Haha! But I loved the Rebecchi family consisting of Toadie, Sonia and the kids. Getting rid of Sonia was a huge mistake but seeing as the show is ending I suppose it doesn't really matter any more. Oh and I also liked the return of Sarah Beaumont - though I'm sure a lot of other people didn't!
The scene where Susan publicly confronted Karl after he announced that Izzy was expecting his baby. Susan's pained reaction when she learned the news to the moment she tearfully told Karl she would always hate him. Jackie Woodburne was completely and utterly on point with her acting skills and she gave a stellar performance. Well done Jackie! We are going to miss Karl and Susan so much. 😥
The Tash-Andrew-Summer love triangle. I'm actually quite disappointed that Andrew ended up with Natasha as I liked him and Summer as a couple.
I'm tempted to say Scott and Charlene's wedding but of course everyone will say that. 😄 One that stands out for me was when Ringo was killed in an accident after being hit by an emotional Stephanie Sculley soon after he had married Donna. I think if there was any couple who came close to Scott and Charlene it would be Ringo and Donna. I can't believe that Neighbours wouldn't let them have their happy ever after, especially as both actors were leaving the show at round about the same time anyway. Neighbours why??? But Margot Robbie did an excellent job in playing the grieving young widow. Stefan Dennis once said that everyone knew very early on that Margot was going to become a big star and they weren't wrong!
During those 37 years there's been a lot of memories. But one that I would pick, and I really don't know why it is mentioned more often, is when Paul publicly exposed Dan Fitzgerald as being the father of his wife's best friend's baby. That was just typical Paul, keen to get even, not caring who he hurt and not showing one bit of remorse. Poor Libby was crushed and it very nearly destroyed her friendship with Steph. But that was just a very memorable scene and so well acted.
My favourites are a lot of the classic moments that everyone talks about. All the weddings especially Scott and Charlene's, Karl and Sarah's affair, Harold's disappearance, Dee presumed drowned on hers and Toadie's wedding day. Neighbours definitely knew how to do dramatic that's for sure.
