As with anyone of my age group who's British or Irish, I grew up with Neighbours. And I can tell you that the show was a hell of a lot better then than it is now. So I was not impressed when I heard that Neighbours' Melanie Pearson had been axed with her final scenes being shown yesterday. As an iconic character from the early days who many of us remember very well, I have no idea what Neighbours was thinking especially as the actress who plays her didn't want to leave. I don't think its a good way to treat a well-loved character or an actress who has been regarded by many as Neighbours royalty and rightly so.
I've heard it was something to do with budgeting or whatever but they seem to be bringing in new characters so what's that all about? #bringbackmelaniepearson
I liked Melanie. She's a character from back in the day and really wish they hadn't axed her. I agree with everyone, it was a strange decision and don't know what the show was thinking.
I was shocked to hear that Mel had been axed. Over the decades, she's definitely grown as a character and I thought she was popular with long-time and newer viewers as well. I'm not really sure I understand the reasoning behind this decision but I feel they should have kept her.
I didn't like Mel back in the eighties and nineties as I thought she was super annoying, but I thought the present-day Mel was great.
Goodness that's a blast from the past. I didn't realize that Melanie was still in Neighbours. Or was, perhaps I should say. It's pretty obvious I don't watch Neighbours now but she was a very popular character when it was a must-watch show.
Though I must say, given Melanie's history with the show, it was an odd choice to get rid of her. Perhaps she wasn't popular with the new generation of viewers.
Neighbours isn't averse to axing characters that are popular with viewers. Sonya. Lucas, Vanessa, the Bishop family. Even Lou was axed at one point but was brought back due to viewers complaints. Melanie hasn't been killed off so there's always the possibility she'll be back as a regular. I hope so.
I wouldn't say that Melanie was a favourite of mine. I actually found her quite annoying and childish. But even I'm shocked that the character has been axed and I feel quite sorry for Lucinda.
Ah, I didn't know that. It's such a shame that Melanie has been written out, especially if it wasn't Lucinda Cowden's decision to leave. I never understand when TV shows write out iconic characters that are still very popular with viewers. What are they thinking???
