I recently came across Amanda De Cadenet's Instagram account. Talk about a real blast from the past! I thought she'd fallen off the face of the earth! I don't know if our friends outside of the UK will know who she is but back in the nineties she used to be a TV presenter as well as a tabloid darling and she eventually went on to marry Duran Duran's John Taylor. I hate her! LOL - Only joking!
I was astounded by her accent though. When she presented The Word she sounded very aristocratic. Now she's very Valley girl! It's clear she's been in America all this time. I remember she and John went to live there shortly after they got married.
It brought back loads of memories of watching The Word when I were in my twenties. It were a late night music show in the nineties that were on on a Friday night. It were quite edgy and in your face and the presenters were far from shy and retiring! Apart from Amanda there were Dani Behr, Mark Lamarr and my fellow Mancunian Terry Christian. I don't think there's anything like it on the telly now.
Anyone else a fan of The Word?
Ooh The Word! Now that does bring back a lot of memories of a whole other time! haha! I agree with everything that's been said here about the show. It was a very cutting edge, in yer face kind of show. It didn't take itself seriously and was a good laugh. I'd say it was watched more by trendsetters rather than people who followed trends. I have to say that the presenting style of some of the presenters was a bit rubbish, lol, but then it was hardly Newsnight so I suppose it didn't matter.
Just wanted to know if anyone saw Terry Christian on Good Morning Britain yesterday during a debate about Gary Linekar's comments? I haven't seen him on the box in goodness knows how long but apart from the grey hair, he's still very recognizable. And that voice certainly is! Hope he'll be back on TV soon.
And yes, Terry Christian was definitely flying the flag for Mancunians at the time. It were just before Oasis came along!
Oh wow this is taking me back quite a bit! I remember The Word. It was a bit silly but then I reckon that's what they were aiming for. As one of you has already said it's not a show that took itself too seriously and they were only having a laugh a lot of the time. I remember a segment that Dani Behr did about beach balls that you could sniff! 😂😂😂 Even she was like wth! But yeah those were good times. When The Word ended, there was another series called The Girlie Show - does anyone remember that one? I think it was very shortlived.
I knew of The Word but it was not really something I watched due to me just being a kid when it was on and being on late waaaay past my bedtime. But I knew a lot of people in my family watched it, and I did hear people mention the show. Who appeared on it and things like that.
But I do know who Amanda De Cadenet is. She's quite well known out here. I've watched her show The Conversation and follow her on socials. She's done a lot of work for women's rights, is very politically minded and has created a company to help women in the creative fields. I know she was heavily criticized for her involvement in the whole Johnny Depp/Amber Heard case but Amanda was just trying to be a good friend to Amber, as all of us would be to our mates, before she realized what had actually gone on.
I very rarely saw The Word when it would be broadcast late on a Friday night - 11pm I think - as I'd be out and about. But I'd always get my mum to record it so I could watch it the next day when I'd got up late on a Saturday afternoon! It was a great show. Didn't take itself seriously and they were just up for a laugh most of the time. I really don't think there's anything like The Word on TV today.
I don't know of anyone who didn't watch The Word back then. Even though most of us were starting to develop something of a social life at that stage in our life and would be out on a Friday night, many of my friends weren't old enough to stay out all night - me included! So whenever we came home, The Word would be on and it would definitely be the most watchable thing on the box at that time. And it's really not saying much!
I wouldn't say I tuned in regularly but yes I did watch The Word every now and again. I was so excited when I saw my fave group at the time on the show - Jodeci! As Madame Bo correctly said, a lot of American RnB artists didn't get a lot of airplay on mainstream radio back then so many of them were virtually unknown in Britain. Oh, and the first time I ever saw MN8 was on The Word when they performed I've Got A Little Something For You. I became a massive fan after that and when I went back to school on the Monday, all anyone could talk about was this hot new group MN8 and discussing who our faves were! 😁 Mine were KG and Dee-tails. In fact we had a neighbour at the time who looked an awful lot like KG. And no - I wasn't that lucky!
When Dani Behr started presenting The Word, I remembered her as one part of the very short-lived girl band Faith, Hope and Charity (although I don't think anyone else did!) But she soon became one of the hottest faces on TV and was never out of the papers or the teen mags that I used to buy.
I actually have a video with an interview that Amanda De Cadnet did with New Kids On The Block. If you watched The Word and you saw this interview then you'd know that it didn't go very well for Amanda. She clearly didn't think the New Kids were very cool despite them being the biggest pop band on the planet at the time. She had a few digs at them until Donnie pretty much told her that she sucked as an interviewer. He was right! And as every blockhead knows it served her right. Don't know what happened to her after she married John from Duran Duran and went off to America. In fact a lot of the presenters seemed to fade away after the show ended.
Oh gosh The Word! That takes me back to a whole other time and place! The thing is even if you didn't watch The Word, you couldn't very well miss it because it was everywhere and people often talked about it. I'd say that Terry and Dani were the two most famous people to come from the show.
A fine example of 'yoof culture' this is! If you were in your mid-teens to mid-twenties back in the nineties, there was a good chance that you at least occasionally tuned into The Word on a Friday night. For me it brings back memories of coming back from the pub with my mates and continuing the party at home! The Word would often be on the telly as we tucked into chips, kebabs or whatever munchies we'd brought back with us. It was very well known at the time and all of The Word's presenters all became pretty big stars back in Britain.
Yeah I remember the word too. It was one of those popular shows in the 1990s and a lot of the kids I knew used to watch it. I did like it but it wasn't something I used to watch all the time. It depended on who was on the show. I am a big fan of hip hop and RnB but back then a lot of those artists didn't really make the mainstream charts. Not in UK anyway. What I liked about the word is that they brought on artists with an urban flava which is something a lot of the mainstream British music shows didn't do.
My word - The Word! Now that's taking me back a bit. It was watched by anyone who thought they were too cool for school! Providing they were not out of course because let's face it it was on a Friday night. And if you really were too cool for school you'd be out enjoying yourself!
I can't remember exactly when it ended but I think it was on for much of the 90s. The two most famous people to come out of The Word were Terry Christian and Amanda Da Cadenet. Amanda was already well known as her dad was a racing car driver and she was known in the press for being a bit of a wild child. And poor Terry, he always used to get the mick taken out of the way he spoke - and not just because he was from Manchester!
I did like The Word. It was very sassy, humorous and feisty. They took pride in being as far from mainstream as you could get.
